Vietnam, South Korea cruise to straight-set wins to go 2-0 in AVC Cup

CANDON CITY — Defending champion Vietnam and South Korea remained in top form in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup presented by the Philippine Sports Commission on Sunday at the Candon City Arena here.

Vietnam overpowered Hong Kong, 25-9, 25-18, 25-11, while South Korea asserted its dominance with a 25-11, 25-14, 25-15 sweep of Uzbekistan to stay unbeaten.

Thi Nhu Quynh Vi led the charge with 11 points, all coming from attacks, as the Vietnamese made quick work of their opponents to improve to a 2-0 record in Group B, tied with Kazakhstan at the top of the standings.

Kazakhstan later defeated Indonesia, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19.

Vietnam dictated the tempo from the opening set, outclassing Hong Kong in attack points, 40-22. The team also capitalized on 25 errors from the opposition to secure another straight-sets win after opening the tournament with a victory over Lebanon.

Sohwi Kang, on the other hand, paced South Korea, which was relegated from the VNL a year ago, with 14 points, while Hyunsoo Na added 12 in another clinical performance.

Sum Yuen Tang topscored for Hong Kong with nine points, but the team absorbed its second straight defeat in the tournament co-presented by the FIVB, AVC, Volleyball World, and the Candon City government led by Mayor Eric Singson.

Tatyana Yatskiv anchored Kazakhstan’s offense with 15 points built on 11 attacks, two blocks, and two aces, while Kristina Belova added 14 points.

Indonesia failed to place a scorer in double figures, with Chelaa Nurtomo leading the team with eight.

Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei opened its campaign with a strong showing, cruising past Kyrgyzstan, 25-14, 25-11, 25-17.

Kan Kohui led Chinese Taipei with 14 points, while Tsai Yuchun and Xu Zhenxuan chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the straight-set victory.
