Ateneo’s Baterbonia, 18, and Adili, 21, pass away
Ateneo de Manila University is in mourning after confirming the passing of two members of its men’s basketball team, Rene Baterbonia (May 8, 2008-June 8, 2026) and Divine Adili (April 14, 2005-June 8, 2026), following a drowning incident during a team-building activity on Monday.
Baterbonia was 18 years old, while Adili was 21 years old.
The Dipaculao Municipal Police Station received a call from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office at approximately 3:15 PM, reporting the incident.
Responding personnel immediately proceeded to the area and assisted in rescue and investigation efforts.
Both student-athletes were rushed to Aurora Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.
However, despite efforts to revive them, they were declared dead on arrival.
Ateneo expressed profound grief over the loss of the two players, describing the tragedy as a deeply painful moment for the entire university community.
“The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine,” the University said in a statement, extending its condolences to their families, teammates, coaches, friends, and loved ones.
Baterbonia was one of the country’s most promising young basketball players.
A native of Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, and a product of Ateneo de Davao, he rose to national prominence after being named Most Valuable Player of the 2025 Palarong Pambansa, where he led Davao Region to the championship.
Adili, meanwhile, was a Nigerian center who joined Ateneo for UAAP Season 88 after previously suiting up for New Era University.
He made his first collegiate campaign with the Blue Eagles this past season.
The University said support mechanisms have been made available for the bereaved families and members of the basketball program as they cope with the tragedy. Ateneo also requested privacy for those affected during this difficult time.
Further details regarding wake and funeral arrangements will be announced once finalized in consultation with the families.
